„Once a year...“

spleen*graz invites members of ASSITEJ Austria, international guests and all those who are interested to attend the ASSITEJ meeting and dialogue. It is a pious wish that every child and every teenager should get the chance to go to the theatre at least once a year. But is it a reasonable wish as well? Art and culture are free. Access to cultural education, however, is not always free for everybody. Some families simply cannot afford admission fees for cultural events, so that some children and teenagers do not get the chance to go to the theatre at all – not even as part of their schools’ programmes. Certain political initiatives stimulate discussions. For example, the Kulturrucksack (Cultural Backpack) offers annual packages with free tickets for various cultural institutions, whereas Theater auf Rezept (Theatre on Prescription) is a project by Junges Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf combining visits to the doctor with free theatre tickets. But how urgent is the need, how wide the scope for action? How is it possible to make cultural events standard components in all school programmes?

ASSITEJ is an international association promoting professional theatre for a young audience.
